Fenerbahce 1-1 Man Utd: Jose Mourinho steals the show again

European football's governing body Uefa will certainly stay in touch – and that's probably where we should start.

In 2023, Mourinho was banned for four games on the sidelines for his behavior around the Europa League final, when his Roma team were beaten by Sevilla in Budapest. Premier League referee Anthony Taylor was manhandled at the airport on his way home after footage emerged of Mourinho waiting in an underground car park after the game to question the referee about his performance.

While reflecting on being red-carded in Istanbul by another leading referee, French referee Clément Turpin, Mourinho referred to the previous incident.

“If I appeal, I get six months,” Mourinho said when an English journalist asked him if he would appeal his dismissal. “Since the Sevilla-Roma final there has been nothing left to do. That’s why the future is better without European competition, so I’m not upset.”

This was a follow-up to his initial response to the man from another broadcaster who he knows exceptionally well, which in turn built on something he said in the build-up to the game, which suggested after spells at Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham, his time in the Premier League may not be over yet.

“The best thing I can do if I leave Fener is to move to a club that doesn't play in the UEFA competition,” he said. “So a club at the bottom of England that needs a manager in two years, I’m ready to go.”

“I don’t want to talk about it anymore. I want to talk about the game.”

Except that this is Jose, and when talking about the game there are many answers – including at one point the suggestion that the local media would be unhappy with the outcome of the game because they would prefer Fenerbahce to lose would have been.
