LOS ANGELES, CA – OCTOBER 25: Freddie Freeman #5 of the Los Angeles Dodgers watches the flight of his walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning during Game 1 of the 2024 World Series presented by Capital One between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on Friday, October 25, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Game 1 of the World Series lived up to the hype of a Fall Classic between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, and Freddie Freeman was the hero.

The Dodgers first baseman hit a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning, capping a dramatic game. The Yankees had taken a 3-2 lead early in the 10th, but Freeman followed through with a 423-foot home run, giving his team a 6-3 victory and a 1-0 lead in the World Series.

It was the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history.

Freeman was sidelined the entire postseason after spraining his ankle in the final week of the regular season. He didn't record a single extra-base hit in the NLDS and NLCS and had to sit out certain games to rest his ankle. Then on Friday he scored a grand slam and a triple.

The play was very reminiscent of Kirk Gibson's walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series against the Oakland A's. In both cases, a first baseman disabled by injury delivered a home run. Gibson's story still looms large over the Dodgers' history, and it will continue to do so if the Dodgers make it through the next few games.

There was also a lot of drama before the Grand Slam. The Dodgers scored the first run, but the Yankees responded with a gigantic home run by Giancarlo Stanton. Both starters, Gerrit Cole and Jack Flaherty, had good starts, but Flaherty was responsible for the defeat.

Shohei Ohtani led the game-winning rally in the eighth inning with a double, went to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mookie Betts. The Yankees nearly took the lead in the ninth inning, but a Gleyber Torres fly ball caught by a fan ended up being ruled a double.

Then, early in the 10th inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. gave the Yankees the lead with a short ball. He singled out Blake Treinen, the Dodgers' top reliever, took second and third and then scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Anthony Volpe. It could have been a big win for the Yankees, but for the Dodgers it was history.

Now the series moves to Game 2 on Saturday, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto of Los Angeles and Carlos Rodón of New York scheduled to open.

Here's how it went at Yahoo Sports:

  • Vegas certainly likes the Dodgers' chances of winning the World Series now. Losing a good start from Gerrit Cole will do that regardless of how it ended.

  • Anyway, Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 5:08 p.m. PT with Carlos Rodón and Yoshinobu Yamamoto scheduled to start.

  • So this game had a Jeffrey Maier and a Kirk Gibson. What more could you want from a Yankees-Dodgers World Series?

  • Freddie Freeman sprained his ankle in the second-to-last series of the Dodgers' regular season. He was clearly hampered in the NLDS and NLCS, missing games and not recording an extra base hit.

And then he comes back and hits a triple and a GRAND SLAM. Baseball.

  • FREDDIE FREEMAN WINS. He cranked Cortes' first pitch into the right field stands, and the Dodgers won Game 1 6-3 in a classic.

On Saturday Game 2 is Yoshinobu Yamamoto against Carlos Rodón.

  • Dodgers 6, Yankees 3

    Walk-off extra-inning grand slam

  • Wow, Ohtani swings the first shot and sends it into foul territory, where Alex Verdugo makes an acrobatic move to bring him down for the second time. The Yankees opt to go with Mookie Betts and let left-hander Nestor Cortes face Freddie Freeman, another player returning from injury. This is a drama.

  • Tommy Edman puts another runner on with a base hit.

And now: Shohei Ohtani. Two on. One out. Late in the 10th, he faces Nestor Cortes, a starting pitcher who has been out for a month with an elbow injury.

This is why everyone was hyping the 2024 World Series.

  • Gavin Lux draws a walk against Jake Cousins, which is great. That means, barring a double play, the Dodgers will bring Shohei Ohtani to the plate.

  • Yankees 3, Dodgers 2

Anthony Volpe hit a grounder that Tommy Edman stopped, but without a play to home. Jazz Chisholm's legs are now making the difference in extra innings.

  • Chisholm steals third from Will Smith without a throw. Now the Dodgers head to the infield.

  • Jazz Chisholm wins singles and then steals second. The Yankees are in scoring position with one out. After the Dodgers fall behind 3-0 against Anthony Rizzo, Anthony Volpe comes on and decides to intentionally walk him.

  • Blake Treinen stays in and gives Giancarlo Stanton a three-pitch strikeout. This will be a huge win for the Dodgers for the rest of the series.

  • Luke Weaver pitches 1-2-3 in the 9th inning

Enrique Hernandez flies out to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning. It looked like the pop-up player was going to strike, but tackle Alex Verdugo made a diving catch to end the frame.

We're heading into the 10th inning!

  • Max Muncy pops out to 2nd base

Luke Weaver messed up Max Muncy's timing with his substitution. Muncy got a pitch right up the middle, but didn't get much of it as Weaver pulled off a bit.
