NEW YORK (KABC) – The Dodgers are world champions for the eighth time!

They fell into a 5-0 loss to the Yankees early in Game 5, but staged an epic comeback to win 7-6 in New York on Wednesday.

Dodger fans across Southern California – and many in New York City – erupted at the end when Walker Buehler returned with just two days' rest to finish the ninth inning.

“In a 5-0 deficit, in a hostile environment, at Yankee Stadium … we kept fighting,” manager Dave Roberts told ABC7's Rob Fukuazki as champagne splashed throughout the locker room. “We persevered. Now we are World Series Champions!”

Game 5 featured a rematch of the series opener's starters, Jack Flaherty for Los Angeles and Gerrit Cole for the Yankees. Both are from Southern California.

The Yankees feasted early on Flaherty, who gave up four runs – including back-to-back homers – before Dave Roberts grabbed him in the second inning and sent in Anthony Banda.

Aaron Judge, who had been pretty quiet this series, fired a shot to right center, Juan Soto was first. The next batter was Jazz Chisholm Jr., who also hit Flaherty deep to right center for a solo hit.

Things weren't looking good for the Dodgers as they entered the fifth inning down 5-0.

But then they finally figured it out, Cole. A long series of singles and doubles, aided by two fielding errors by the Yankees, helped them hold the order and level it at 5-5 heading into the sixth.

At the end of the eighth round the score was tied by six points.

With the bases loaded, Mookie Betts hit a deep pop fly to center and Tommy Edman singled to make it 7-6. That left Freddie Freeman with two players and a chance to be the hero of the game again. But Freeman struck out with a swing, sending the Yankees back to the plate.

Freeman, who hit home runs in the first four consecutive games of the series, was named World Series MVP.

Walker Buehler, who pitched five scoreless innings in Game 3, returned with a short break to end the game in the ninth.

“This is more than I could ever imagine,” Edman said afterwards. “It was an incredible journey. It’s the best feeling in the world.”

The Dodgers' victory was aided by several errors by the Yankees at crucial moments, including fielding errors by Aaron Judge at center and Anthony Volpe at shortstop, combined with Cole failing to cover a Betts grounder to first.

When Buehler struck out Verdugo to end the game, the Dodgers streamed onto the field to celebrate between the mound and first base. This capped a season in which they won 98 games and finished with the best record of the regular season.

“There’s just a lot of ways we can win baseball games,” Buehler said. “Of course the superstars we have on our team and the discipline fit together.”
Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers' record-breaking $700 million signing and baseball's first 50-homer, 50-steal player, went 2 for 19 with no RBIs and had a single after getting in on a stolen base attempt His shoulder was severed in Game 2.
