ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team forced overtime with a corner kick late in the fourth quarter, but lost 2-1 to No. 1 Northwestern on Friday (Oct. 25) at Phyllis Ocker Field.

The Wildcats, who secured a share of the Big Ten Conference regular-season title with the win, scored the game-winning goal at 64:30 with a rebound from the left post. Northwestern's Maddie Zimmer carried the ball into the circle from the right baseline and passed it forward. Sophomore/freshman Hala Silverstein made the first stop, but the rebound went left to Lauren Wadas, who knocked it in behind Silverston.

Senior/Junior Emmy Tran scored the equalizer late in the fourth quarter, 54-40, on a Michigan penalty corner. PhD student Kate McLaughlin inserted directly to Senior/Junior Abby Tamer on the left side of the arch. Tamer hammered a hard shot to the ground, and Tran went all out to achieve her second career goal – and first since 2021.

The game remained goalless until halftime. The Wolverines (11-3, 4-2 Big Ten) controlled large portions of the game, including most of the first and fourth quarters. The teams combined for just six shots in the first half before Northwestern broke the tie at 35-24 on its own corner early in the third quarter. Zimmer fired a drag shot from the top of the arc, and Chloe Relford deflected it off the right post.

Northwestern (16-0, 6-0 Big Ten) narrowly led in both shots, 11-10, and corner kicks, 7-6.

Silverstein was spectacular in the Wolverine cage with a total of six saves, including a breakaway stop in the final seconds of the first half and two Northwestern corner kicks that tied the game late in the fourth quarter. NU goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz stopped seven of eight UM shots on goal.

Michigan will conclude the home portion of its regular season on Sunday (Oct. 27) when it hosts Indiana at Ocker Field at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on B1G+ and entry is free.
