The couple separated in 1987 after 26 years of marriage and divorced in 1990.

As much as Stewart believes the “cookie cutter house and cookie cutter life” as a “miserable former housewife” wasn't for her, she admits the breakup was tough. In an interview with People magazine in 2020, Stewart opened up about the split, saying, “Divorce was a terrible thing for me because we were the first in my family to get divorced…and we've been together since the divorce.” Not having spoken to each other is even worse. “Painful.”

He studied law but works in publishing

Andrew Stewart is the son of an investment banker from New York and comes from a privileged background. As a child he lived and studied in Florida, Switzerland and Vermont. He studied philosophy at the University of Virginia before earning a law degree from Yale Law School. He then earned his LLM (Advanced Law) degree from Columbia University in New York.

He began his career as a lawyer but then switched to publishing and became president of the Harry N. Abrams firm. Stewart later founded his own publishing company, Stewart, Tabori & Chang. Today he is publisher emeritus at Fieldstone Publishing. According to his wife, Shyla Nelson Stewart, he enjoys photographing nature.
