Watch USWNT striker Alyssa Thompson score her first international goal with a stunning finish

It was a good night for the USWNT teens on Thursday as the USA cruised to a 3-1 win over Iceland behind some of the team's young stars. Nineteen-year-old strikers Alyssa Thompson and Jaedyn Shaw both achieved incredible results, with Thompson scoring her first international goal.

Thompson hasn't been on the U.S. roster in over a year, but he returned with a bang on Thursday. In the 39th minute, she fired a brilliant finish into the top right corner of the goal, giving the USA an early 1-0 lead.

Immediately after the goal, Thompson sprinted to U.S. striker Sophia Smith, who was warming up on the sideline as a substitute. Smith scored the third USWNT goal of the night – a laser shot from the top of the box.

But a few minutes earlier, Shaw had opened the scoring in the 85th minute after Iceland's Selma Sól Magnúsdóttir had equalized early in the half. En route to her eighth international goal, Shaw missed a defender and nutmegged the Icelandic goalkeeper.

Thompson, who secured her third international start, was named Woman of the Match.

It's an interesting time for the USWNT. Coach Emma Hayes takes the time to find a balance between the team's veterans while giving new players a chance to prove themselves. Thursday's game marked the 100th cap for veteran defender Emily Sonnett, but also the first cap for midfielder Hal Hershfelt and striker Yazmeen Ryan, two standout NWSL players who were called up this window.

The game was the first of three games in the October friendly window, with the series serving as a victory tour following the USWNT's gold medal run at the Olympics. The U.S. plays Iceland again on Sunday before facing Argentina on Wednesday. Hayes said in last week's press conference that there will be different squads for each of the three games, giving several players the chance to earn international caps and showcase their skills.
