Diwali celebration at the White House

US President Joe Biden hosted a Diwali celebration at the White House on October 29, 2024, attended by more than 600 eminent Indian Americans, including congressmen, civil servants and business leaders from across the country.

In a standing-room-only East Room of the White House, Biden said: “As President, I had the honor of hosting the largest Diwali reception ever at the White House.

Mr. Biden, who lit the formal diya in the Blue Room of the White House, said the South Asian American community has enriched every part of American life. “That's the truth. This is one of the fastest growing and most engaged communities in the country where you are now,” he said.

“On this day in America we reflect on this journey of light. At the dawn of our nation's founding, a generation ago, Diya stood in the shadow of distrust. Now is the time for Diwali to be celebrated openly and proudly here at the White House. We also know that today we are facing a turning point,” he said.
