Evacuations are expected to be lifted soon after crews shut off water to a pipe that ruptured in Lemmon Valley early Thursday morning.

According to the Red Cross, about 25 houses have been affected and water supplies in the area have been interrupted. Volunteers are on site providing assistance at the Washoe County evacuation center at 8085 Silver Lake Road.

According to TMFR, two houses have water in the living spaces.

According to TMWA, the cause of the break is still under investigation. While most pipes in the area are around 50 years old, this pipe is around 15 years old.

The 36-inch water main break prompted evacuations near Matterhorn Drive.

“The breach was isolated,” said Andy Gebhardt, director of distribution services at TMWA. “The water flow to the broken main pipe is interrupted. We are assessing the damage and once the water recedes we will begin repairs as quickly as possible.”

All TMWA customers in the affected area have water service.

Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue crews said they responded to the break in the Chesapeake Drive neighborhood around 7 a.m.

Firefighters are on site assessing the damage to find out where they can provide assistance.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is assisting with traffic control north of Lemmon Valley Drive between Oregon Blvd and Deodar Drive. Please note that additional roads may be temporarily closed.
