Timothée Chalamet crashes the doppelganger competition before it is shut down by the police

Timothée Chalamet was anything but an unknown when he competed in a Timothée Chalamet lookalike competition in New York City.

There was “pandemonium” among contestants and spectators on Sunday when the New York native appeared in the crowd that numbered in the thousands, according to NBC News, 30 minutes into the competition.

There were gasps and screams as Chalamet filmed Marty Supreme in NYC, joined his brunette, wavy lookalikes in Washington Square Park. According to the Associated Press, Chalamet was accompanied by bodyguards.

The actor, who sported a mustache under his black hat and shorter hair than many of the contestants, flashed peace signs as he stood alongside contestants who did the same dune And Wonka hopes to win the $50 prize – and bragging rights.

The award ultimately went to 21-year-old Miles Mitchell of Staten Island Wonka costume, including a briefcase, and helped win over the judges by throwing candy to the crowd.

Mitchell was presented with a huge check made out to “Best Tim.”

USA Today reported that the NYPD broke up what it described as an “unscheduled demonstration” because organizers, including YouTuber Anthony Po and Instagram influencer Tamir Omari, did not receive permission. A police spokesperson told the outlet four people were arrested and released with a summons.

The Cut posted a video showing a Chalamet lookalike being handcuffed.

Organizers — who were fined $500, according to the Associated Press — promoted the event in the days leading up to the competition by distributing flyers throughout New York. According to Variety, there were 2,500 RSVPs for an online invite as of Sunday morning.

“That’s the way of culture,” Po said, holding up his fine. “And that is the price of culture.”

“It started as a silly joke and has now turned into chaos,” said Paige Nguyen, a producer who helped Po put on the event, according to the AP.

“We got kicked out of Washington Square Park,” Omari said in a video. “We never expected so many people to come. … The expectations were that we could have an orderly doppelganger competition.”
