They were drafted in the same year and even made their NFL debuts in the same game, each with a preconceived narrative attached to them.

Josh Allen was a largely unknown star in Wyoming with physical skills that led the Buffalo Bills to select him No. 7 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Lamar Jackson was a Heisman Trophy winner at Louisville who fell to the Baltimore Ravens at No. 32 overall as he faced questions about his ability as a passer. Both have spent the first six years of their NFL careers appeasing doubters, starting with their first professional appearance – a 47-3 Bills victory over the Ravens in the 2018 season, in which Allen and Jackson filled in as backup players.

They will meet again on Sunday night in one of the most important matchups of Week 4 of the NFL schedule. Jackson is the league's reigning MVP, Allen could be the favorite to win the award after three games, and this could well be a preview of the AFC playoffs.

The Bills are off to a 3-0 start and Allen is on pace to set new career highs in completion percentage and yards per completion despite the offseason trade of wide receiver Stefon Diggs. The Ravens picked up their first win of the 2024 season last week in Dallas, led by a revamped backfield with Jackson and offseason newcomer Derrick Henry, after starting the year with two losses.
