WATCH AGAIN: Dolphins-Bills on NFL+

Eric Edholm's insights:

  1. Bass helped Bills to a big win. Tyler Bass scored a 61-yard field goal for the Bills in the final seconds of the game, handing the Dolphins a crushing defeat. The kick – which had a lot of leg – ended a streak of seven straight goals before the Dolphins were unable to score in the final seconds of the game. For Bass, the moment was huge. The Bills had drafted other kickers and signed contenders to the practice squad after Bass missed two extra points, and he missed one Sunday and also had a kick that came off the post against Miami. Bass' miss on the right wing after the divisional round loss last January was also still fresh in fans' minds. But his game-winner was the first big kick Bass had made this season and only his second attempt (and attempt) of 50 yards or more. The Bills appeared to be in Hail Mary mode Josh Allen's third-and-10 pass failed and the Bills found themselves sitting at the Miami 43-yard line. There would have been a failure Tua Tagovailoa He had only a slim chance of winning the game in regulation time, but Bills coach Sean McDermott showed confidence when he sent Bass out – and he was rewarded with a win that made the Bills the heavy favorites to win again of the division after defeating Miami in the season series.
  2. The Dolphins' critical errors cost them a much-needed win. After tying the game with 1:38 left, the Dolphins appeared to be in great shape, bringing the Bills to a third-and-1 with just one timeout at their own 26-yard line with under a minute left. 14 situation left. Had they stopped the Bills, the Dolphins could have gotten the ball back and potentially won the game in regulation time. But Hack Robinson (who had a big sack the game before) jumped into the neutral zone, and that was followed by a massive, unnecessary roughness penalty from ex-Bills safety Jordan Poyer in his first game back in Buffalo. That gave the Bills new life, and they gained just enough yards to set up Bass' game-winning kick. The Dolphins had a similarly damaging game early in the third quarter Raheem Mostert The ball popped out after a run in Buffalo territory. The Dolphins threatened to extend their lead to 10-6 at halftime, but the Bills recovered, immediately went down and scored to regain control of the game. Tua Tagovailoa has played well in both games since returning to the lineup, but the Dolphins still haven't won against the Patriots since Week 5, with each of their last three losses coming by a point.
  3. Allen should move up in the MVP race. Even though I didn't do it Amari CooperThe Bills put on a strong offensive performance – especially in the second half – and put an end to their division rivals. Allen was limited by the Dolphins' two-high coverages throughout the game, forcing him to look downfield and look for downfield options. Aside from a 14-yard run late in the second quarter, he also worked well as a scrambler. But even with an interception, he played a smart game and made enough big plays to pull off another big win. Allen's INT wasn't in the hands of a rookie Keon Coleman Just as the Bills were about to score, they were denied a touchdown by a penalty (a shaky one at that). Still, Allen rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns in the second half, including a nice fourth-and-goal pass Mack Hollins and an improvisational gem at that Quintin Morris for the go-ahead shot in the fourth quarter. Allen was certainly one of the favorites for MVP before Sunday, but his performance against the Dolphins deserves a boost.

Insight into next-gen stats for Dolphins-Bills (via NFL Pro): Josh Allen was efficient against the Lightning in Week 9, completing 7 of 9 pass attempts for 97 yards and three touchdowns. Allen posted an 8.9% completion rate above expectations against the Lightning, his fourth-highest mark in a game this season (two of his four best performances came against the Dolphins). Allen also recorded a career-low 3.7 air yards per attempt, which led to his highest yards after catch percentage (81.7%).

NFL Research: The Bills have won six straight and 13 of the last 14 against the Dolphins, including the playoffs. Sean McDermott is now 15-2 against Miami since becoming the Bills head coach.
