Steve Kerr put his incredible roster depth to good use as the Golden State Warriors dismantled the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday, October 23rd. Kerr stuck with his new frontfield look of Draymond Green, Trayce Jackson-Davis and Jonathan Kuminga, while starting Andrew Wiggins alongside Steph Curry. He then opened his bench, which in turn kept the starting minutes low and ensured the team could maintain their faster pace of play.

After the Warriors' win in the opening game, Kerr admitted he would likely continue to use the unconventional rotation. He told the media attending his postgame press conference that everyone earned their minutes and he had a hard time cutting the rotation down to 10 players.

“We’ll get there,” Kerr said. “I've never played against 12 before, but we'll get there. It's not easy for anyone, but we just have to trust them from one night to the next. We'll find people in combinations that really work. And.” The guys need to understand that some nights are their night and some nights aren't… I couldn't justify that (taking two players out of the rotation) because they all played really well in camp… This is the case deep in the team I have ever coached.

Playing a 12-man rotation is unconventional. Most coaches stick to a rotation of 10 players or less. However, given the pace the Warriors are aiming for and the amount of reliable rotation players on the roster, it makes sense for Kerr to keep the minutes short and take a closer look at everyone on the roster.

It will be interesting to see if the Warriors continue to rely on such a strong rotation as the season progresses or if Kerr begins to shrink the bench unit after the All-Star break. For now, however, Kerr is likely to stick to his fast-paced substitution pattern, so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
