Singer Loomis is apologizing after he dropped several profanities during a performance of the national anthem at the Free and Equal Elections Foundation debate with third-party presidential candidates last week.

“When I realized I had messed up, I panicked and cursed,” she said in an emailed statement to Fox News Digital. “I was so nervous and you all saw what happened. It’s the national anthem, my family was watching, especially my dad,” who is an Army veteran.

“I didn't mean to. But I responded in the raw and unfiltered way that I am,” she added.

She apologized more fully on social media and explained more about the situation to her followers.

“I want to take a moment to apologize to the amazing team at @FreeAndEqualElections, their incredible production team and everyone who watched!” she wrote as the caption for a video of herself apologizing on Instagram.

“I got there a little late and didn't have a clear lead, which made me nervous when we went live! I know it wasn’t my best and I’m really sorry if it didn’t hit the mark.”

Last Wednesday, Loomis was hired to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” during a live broadcast of the debate between third-party presidential candidates on C-SPAN. The debate featured Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Libertarian Party candidate Chase Oliver and Constitution Party candidate Randall Terry.

Loomis' voice cracked as she attempted to sing, “And the Rocket's Red Glare,” which immediately embarrassed the singer.

“I messed up. I screwed up. Can I go back? Can I please go back?” She pleaded in a video that subsequently went viral on social media.

Loomis was quickly informed by someone off-screen that the performance was live, much to her obvious horror. She then immediately resumed her performance, but then paused and explained that she was “nervous” before continuing.

“For my part, I take full responsibility and ask you not to use this incident to reflect on the artist I am and try to be,” she wrote in the caption to her apologetic Instagram post. “I consider this a lesson learned and I can’t wait to come back even stronger!”

In the accompanying recorded video, Loomis asked for absolution. “Please, please, please forgive me,” she said before leaving some words of advice. “Always turn lemons into lemonade and turn negatives into positives.”

While some people online were sympathetic to the singer's situation, Loomis was largely criticized on social media.

“Who the hell chooses these untalented screamers to butcher our national anthem? Absolutely inexcusable and so disrespectful!!” one person complained.

“Just terrible. No further description is needed,” said another.

“It was a terrible display. I wish we could all go back,” another posted.

Others online pointed to pop singer Fergie's infamous national anthem performance at the NBA All-Star Game in 2018 and wondered whether that was worse.

“And I think nothing could be worse than Fergie's rendition of the US national anthem,” one person wrote. “I know Fergie is grinning from ear to ear right now because she's no longer having the worst national anthem performance in history,” another teased.
