The risk of isolated strong storms and flooding remains in North Texas

2 minutes, 8 seconds Read

Monday is a first weather alert day for North Texas as strong and severe storms threaten.

The greatest threat of severe weather remains east of North and Central Texas Monday evening.

A moderate line of thunderstorms is moving east and a moderate group of storms is developing over Rockwall and Kaufman counties. The biggest concerns will be heavy rain and gusty winds below 30 mph. A few storms will continue behind the front over the next few hours. Lightning is the biggest threat, so these should remain mild.

Monday started out warm, humid and windy with temperatures in the 70s. From 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., storms developed in western counties before moving east toward the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the storm line moved into the Metroplex with all possible dangers.

From 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., storms will move out of the Metroplex and strengthen eastward.

In addition to the storms, heavy rainfall is expected. Some areas have already received a few inches of rain, and another inch or two of rain could cause flooding problems.

The air mass is rich in moisture and will displace heavier precipitation as the system moves eastward on Monday. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will result in isolated and possibly isolated instances of flash flooding across North Texas.

Remember never to drive through flooded roads. It only takes about six inches of water to sweep a car away and move it downstream.

A few showers are possible into Tuesday morning, but skies will clear into the afternoon hours and highs will only be in the mid 60s Election day.

Drier air Monday evening will drop temperatures into the 40s to 50s, but with the upper system still to the west, mid- and high-level clouds will limit the full cooling potential. Much cooler and drier conditions are expected Tuesday and Tuesday evening, with highs in the low 60s to lower 70s and lows in the low 40s to lower 50s.

After a brief break in precipitation on Monday and Tuesday, rain and storms return to Dallas-Fort Worth Thursday through Saturday morning. Seasonal temperatures will be in the 70s all week.
