The Raiders' plan if Mahomes becomes the “wizard.”

The Raiders' plan if Mahomes becomes the “wizard.”

When the Las Vegas Raiders take on quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, they will face numerous difficulties.

These difficulties are complex and exist not only because of Mahomes, but also because of the good players and coaches he has around him. These players and coaches give Mahomes, a generational talent, an even greater competitive advantage on game day.

One of the unique challenges for Mahomes is the fact that he is one of the most accurate passes in the National Football League today and in general. However, his accuracy becomes even more lethal as he is capable of breaking through at any time and destroying a down-and-out defense that has spent all week trying to find ways to slow down the Chiefs' passing game.

Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham believes the best thing a defense preparing for Mahomes can do is get quality drills and reps during practice week. Graham praised Las Vegas' preparation for preparing the Raiders' defense for the challenge ahead.

“The most important thing is to try to simulate it in practice,” Graham said. “The show team invests a lot in this. And again, it's not his fault, and it's not their ability, but we're grateful for the work of our exhibition team and the offensive coaches who train the exhibition team, what they give us during practice. Yesterday they did some of the scramble exercises.”

Whether it's defending the pass or Mahomes' legs, the Raiders' defense will have to be at its best on Sunday. Graham wisely emphasized discipline this week for a talented Raiders defense that can play undisciplined at times. He knows that anything less than fundamentally solid defensive play can cost the team.

Given the struggles the Raiders' offense has had this season, their defense needs to play even better than it normally does.

“That’s important, especially when you prepare and then watch the tape, it’s about discipline,” Graham said. “You have discipline with the rush lanes. You have discipline in your deep field reporting. They have discipline when they move and he is about to draw your attention to your husband or harass your area. So it's a big thing of discipline. And the other part is simulating it in practice.”
