MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray was placed in the NBA's concussion protocol after quitting in the third quarter of Friday's 119-116 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Murray was crossing the lane with Anthony Edwards guarding him when Julius Randle backed up to pursue Aaron Gordon and accidentally hit his shoulder against Murray's nose.

Murray's head was thrown back against Edwards by the impact, and he writhed in pain as the game continued before he subbed out during a timeout four possessions later and headed to the locker room for further evaluation.

Nuggets coach Michael Malone had no update on Murray after the game.

“It was definitely a significant achievement,” Malone said. “Of course, we will always put his health and safety first and ensure he is well. If he can't play (Saturday), we hope to get him back as soon as possible, but I just don't do that. “I want to speculate because I really don't know the details.

Murray scored six points on 2-of-7 shooting in 22 minutes.

That continued a relatively slow start to the season for Murray, who signed a four-year, $208 million contract extension in September. He averaged 18.8 points on 37.9% shooting in the Nuggets' first four games Friday night.
