In a rematch 43 years in the making, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees 6-3 in Game 1 of the World Series.

The Boys in Blue were the first to score in the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to a triple to right field by Kiké Hernandez, followed by a sacrifice fly by catcher Will Smith.

The Dodgers didn't stay on top long after slugger Giancarlo Stanton – an L.A. native – singled right fielder Juan Soto for a two-run home run against his hometown team, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

LA had a chance to tie the game in the seventh with runners in scoring position, but couldn't bring it home when second baseman Gavin Lux went out.

The Dodgers' defense held the Yankees at bay until the eighth, pulling the team back with pitcher Alex Vesia striking out twice and forcing Anthony Volpe out.

Superstar Shohei Ohtani was relatively quiet in his first World Series game, doubling to right field but making it to third thanks to a fielding error by Volpe.

On the next attack, Mookie Betts drove Ohtani to tie the score with a sacrifice fly to center.

Neither team was able to get the go-ahead score until the ninth inning, pushing the World Series into extra innings. The Yankees gave the go-ahead RBI after shortstop Tommy Edman fumbled a ground ball that allowed Jazz Chisholm Jr. to bring home and the score was 3-2 when pitcher Blake Treinen struck out Austin Wells.

But Edman made up for it by getting on base on his next at-bat. From there, the Yankees survived Ohtani's next at-bat, only to have Betts intentionally run over and load the bases for Freddie Freeman.

With the first pitch, a four-seam fastball, Freeman launched a walk-off grand slam, the first in World Series history, to right field, sealing the game for the Dodgers, 6-3.
