The Israeli opposition leader calls on Netanyahu to make a hostage deal, even if it exacts a “painful” price

Israeli opposition leader Benny Gantz has called on Benjamin Netanyahu to reach an agreement that allows the release of hostages, even if it comes at a “painful” price.

After Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, a total of 97 hostages remain missing.

Israel's official figure for people held in Gaza is 101 – but that includes four people taken hostage in 2014 and 2015, two of whom are believed to have died.

Mr. Gantz acknowledged that the fighting in Gaza must “continue for years,” but said it was necessary to bring back the hostages who were kidnapped “because of the biggest mistake in our history.”

“The time is riper than ever to pursue a rapid plan to repatriate the hostages,” he said.

“I appeal to the Prime Minister – just as you rightly ordered an attack on Iran, do what is right and necessary to bring our daughters and sons home, even if it comes at a painful price – do not hesitate because You will receive full support.

“The fighting in Gaza, as you know as well as I do, will continue for years to come – because it is not possible for Gaza to be ruled by Hamas.”

“The question is whether we will see in Israel our 101 sons and daughters kidnapped because of the greatest mistake in our history – under your watch.”

“They should be returned home. It’s difficult, it’s complex – and it’s necessary.”
