The Dodgers could cut ties with a key veteran to afford a $152 million slugger

The Los Angeles Dodgers are one win away from winning the World Series against the New York Yankees. However, after this season ends, many key players will leave in free agency.

Zach Pressnell of FanSided named Kiké Hernández as a luxury the Dodgers might not be able to afford if they want to make an aggressive run at Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames.

“The Dodgers will look to bring in a franchise shortstop this offseason. Combined with Hernandez's price tag increasing by the day, it appears he has locked himself out of Los Angeles,” Pressnell wrote. “This is especially true if the Dodgers aggressively seek to sign shortstop Willy Adames from the Milwaukee Brewers.”

The Dodgers signed Hernández to a one-year, $4 million contract before the season. His offseason may have set him up for a raise next year. The Dodgers need to bring in an elite shortstop to fill their biggest need, and Hernández may have given themselves a luxury they can't afford. Hernández struggled offensively during the regular season but was elite on defense.

“His postseason performance, however, was anything but subpar,” Pressnell wrote. “While Hernandez's bat offers the same defensive versatility and excellence, it also comes to life. In 11 postseason games, Hernandez is hitting .282/.349/.487 with two home runs, five RBIs and a triple.”

Spotrac expects Adames to sign a six-year, $152 million contract in free agency.
