The 49ers should tackle Devin White

2 minutes, 14 seconds Read

In one of the most shocking roster moves of the day, the Eagles released LB Devin White after he didn't play once all season. This move is questionable for many different reasons, but the main one is where he will go next.

Many teams could use White's incredible speed and downhill ability to bolster their defense, but the Niners could use her the most. De'Vondre Campbell hasn't proven to be a starting linebacker on this team, or perhaps on any team. Currently, Campbell is the 69th ranked LB according to PFF. Only 79 LBs are graded. He is one of the very few players who does not have a PFF grade above 55 for his position. If the statistics are not enough, watch some films, it will be the same. In particular, watch Kyler Murray's rushing touchdown against the 49ers starting Sunday. Even Shanahan blamed him.

Devin White's rare speed is his greatest attribute, and the Niners are the team to take advantage of it. Watch Fred Warner race across the field like a bullet to make a tackle. Warner does this with a 4.64 40. Devin White makes Warner look like a turtle with his 4.42. Imagine if Devin White, one of the most gifted LBs in the game today, could take some time to learn from Fred Warner. He has already made it clear in interviews that he loves and respects Fred Warner's playing. He would just have to take the time and effort to learn how to play SF. He would scare any team and strengthen that unit more than De'Vondre Campbell. They could get all of this for less than $4 million.

White's contract was a one-year deal worth $4 million. He probably won't get a better deal if he just gets cut, so spend a few million so you can see what he's got. It would already be less than what Campbell makes, and you can have her compete for the starting role.

To me it is so obvious that this should happen. Signing White offers this LB core a big opportunity to strengthen without Greenlaw, but it's a bit of a gamble. Maybe the Eagles were right, maybe he's not the same player he was when he won a Super Bowl. Or maybe the Eagles are falling apart and can't figure out how to use him. As long as this whole thing ends with the Niners getting to see it for themselves I'll be happy, I'd hate to see him go to a contest and perform.
