Teen fatally shoots 13-year-old boy in Minneapolis: police

According to police, a 13-year-old was fatally shot by a 14-year-old in a Minneapolis home early Tuesday morning.

What we know

The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) said the shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of Ferrant Place. Officers on scene found a 13-year-old boy inside the home with an apparent gunshot wound, who was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the 13-year-old was shot while the 14-year-old was “handling a weapon,” a news release said. The 14-year-old boy was arrested at the scene.

Minneapolis police described this incident as an “apparently accidental shooting,” but according to the press release, notable officials are still working to determine what led to the shooting.

Two adult women and other juveniles were home at the time of the shooting, but no other injuries were reported.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara issued a statement saying, “The death of a child is always incredibly disturbing and tragic. Our investigators will work diligently to answer the many questions we have. “In addition, we will support the families affected by this tragedy.” “Everyone must do their utmost to ensure that every weapon is stored safely.”

What we don't know

MPD said in the news release that officers were “familiar with both boys” involved in this incident, but did not provide further details.

Police did not provide any information about who owned the gun or how the teenager got it.
