LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A small plane crashed into a road near Baptist East Hospital Friday evening.

According to St. Matthew police, the accident occurred at the intersection of Breckinridge Lane and Kresge Way around 6:30 p.m

St. Matthew's Police Chief Barry Wilkerson said the plane hit a car when it crashed. There were two people in both the plane and the car.

Officials said the plane lost power while attempting to land at Bowman Field.

“The aircraft came around trying to return to the field, lost power and was looking for a wide, flat area to land, and when it landed over the intersection, it brought down the entire traffic light infrastructure,” St. Matthew's Fire said said spokesman Rick Tonini.

All four people were injured and taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries. However, officials said they currently believe the injuries are not life-threatening.

“I go outside and everyone is standing around. You see airport officials, firefighters and police officers, and then you see a plane and I'm like, 'Is that a car?'” said resident Hadley Grider. “And I was walking around and I saw the windshield of the car was missing and I thought, 'Wow, that's stunning'.”

The family of the flight instructor on board said he underwent surgery. They say he was on the plane with a student pilot and landed on the street to avoid surrounding houses. The flight instructor's family said he suffered a broken wrist, a broken femur and a cut to his neck.

The intersection reopened late Friday evening.
