Should the NFL expand replay ratings?

After the Thursday Night Football matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8, we know two things are true. The Detroit Lions hangover is real and NFL officiating still leaves a lot to be desired.

Losing 28-20, a missed facemask by Los Angeles on Minnesota quarterback Sam Darnold dashed any hope the Vikings had of a comeback and reignited the annual discussion about why there isn't more help available to NFL officials.

At the end of the day I get it. These athletes are moving at a million miles an hour and things happen in a matter of seconds – so we understand that it's difficult to take the lead. Still, it's 2024 and I still don't think we're using the technology to its full potential yet.

That brings us to today's question of the day:

Should the NFL expand its reviewable games?

My answer: Absolutely. Ultimately, there's no real reason not to expand your playback options. I've had a pretty simple solution in mind for a few years now.

For each game, an additional referee or “rules expert” was to be stationed in New York City at NFL headquarters. This particular official has a direct line to the head official they are working with that week and would be able to provide real-time assistance to the officiating teams on the field. Something like this already exists with the “repetition help” that was added in 2021, but its scope is too limited.

Questionable pass interference call? Pick up the flag, Bob. Ticky Tack increases the pass penalty? Not today! Missed Facemask at a critical point in the game, just before a Hail Mary never should have happened? (Get in line, Minnesota. You're all acting like you're the first team hurt by an obviously bad decision.)
