SHA, Fulton and Montabella roll into 8-man playoffs - The Morning Sun

Three Mid-Michigan football programs will compete in the MHSAA 8-man playoffs this weekend at Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy, Fulton and Montabella.

Fulton and Montabella will both play in the 8-player larger school division field, while Mt. Pleasant SHA will play in the 8-player small school division field.

So without further ado, here is a look at the individual encounters.

Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy (6-3) vs. Grand Rapids Sacred Heart Academy (9-0), Saturday, 1 p.m. at Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian

Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy secured a playoff spot for the second straight year in 2024 after winning its final two regular season games to secure it. In those games, the Irish outscored opponents 95-14.

The Irish have had a solid season all around, as they got off to a strong 2-0 start early before losing 56-49 to top-ranked Portland St. Pat's in a game that could have gone either way. The Irish also gave Fulton a great game before falling short late.

On paper, Mt. Pleasant SHA can score with anyone, as it averages 38 points per game and allows 21. The Irish will need to make some defensive stops on Saturday to make a splash.

Grand Rapids Sacred Heart Academy is an interesting story in that it is only in its second year as a varsity football program. Last year the Falcons went 1-2. This season, at 9-0, they are the top-ranked team in the 8-player division (Division 2).

This season, Grand Rapids SHA has averaged 32 points per game and allowed 14.

Montabella (6-3) at Indian River Inland Lakes (9-0), Friday, 7 p.m

The Montabella Mustangs had a memorable season in 2024, going 5-0 in the Mid-State Activities Conference Blue and winning their first conference title in 54 years.

The Mustangs are also in the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

Montabella has always been stable this season. They opened the season 2-2 with losses to top-ranked undefeated team Grand Rapids Sacred Heart (21-20) and top-ranked Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart (21-8) before winning five of their last six games. The Mustangs average 31 points per game but allow 15.

Inland Lakes won the Ski Valley Conference title this fall by going 5-0 in conference action. They enter the postseason in fourth place in the 8-player rankings (Division 1).

On the season, the Bulldogs average 50 points per game and only allow

Fulton (8-1) at Kingston (7-2), Friday, 7 p.m

Fulton had its best regular season since 2007 as the Pirates won their first 13 games en route to a spot in the Division 8 state finals.

Fulton, Portland St. Pat's and Morrice all tied for first place in the Mid-State Activities Conference Red this fall as each had a 5-1 record in the conference. Fulton's only loss came in Week 5 at Morrice by a score of 22-0. However, the Pirates rebounded in weeks six and seven, scoring big wins over Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy (60-33) and Portland St. Pat's (24-20).

This season, Fulton has outscored its opponents 416-94. The Pirates average 46 points per game but only allow 10. In the last two weeks alone, Fulton has outscored opponents 102-6 en route to its third straight playoff appearance. Fulton is also on a four-game winning streak.

Kingston finished third in the Blue Division of the Big Thumb Conference as the Cardinals went 5-2 in the conference behind state giants Deckerville and Brown City. Kingston pulled off a minor upset in week nine when they defeated top-ranked Marion 26-22.

The Cardinals average 43 points per game but allow 26.
