ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar was in Rochester Friday morning to unveil a program to support college students.

The College-In-3 program allows students to complete higher education in three years instead of the usual four years. Senator Klobuchar has previously sponsored legislation that made this program possible and said she is working with the chancellor of the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) to obtain federal support for the program.

“By allowing students to complete their undergraduate degrees a year before many of their peers, we can lower tuition costs, encourage more Minnesotans to enter in-demand careers and healthcare, and give graduates a head start knowing we have the right jobs “,” Klobuchar said.

The original College-In-3 pilot program launched at ten different college campuses across the country, including UMR.

Each school's program offered different types of degrees that students could pursue, and UMR chose healthcare because Rochester is home to the Mayo Clinic.

“The idea that this potential would be wasted is truly outrageous, so we must address the costs while at the same time being affected by inflation like everyone else,” said UMR Chancellor Lori Carrell. “That’s why we need both political partners and industry partners if we want to innovate in higher education to provide transformative education that is also affordable.”

UMR had ten students participate in its College-In-3 pilot program, and all ten will graduate in December.
