The race for Maine's Senate seat continues. Incumbent independent Senator Angus King is in the lead with over 52 percent of the vote.

Senator King says he's ready for a third term. However, he stopped short of declaring victory.

As the votes have come in, he remains in the lead.

As an independent, he relies on the votes of both parties, even though he caucuses with the Democrats.

“I am very confident with the results of this election, especially because I am currently over 50 percent. Therefore, ranked choice voting would not be in effect. And we feel very comfortable with the places that aren’t in yet,” King said.

King's Republican opponent, Demi Kouzounas, says she's holding on to hope in this race.

As she wished her supporters goodnight late Tuesday, she told them the race wasn't over yet.

“We believe this will lead to ranked choice voting. We will know better tomorrow when the numbers are available. This is amazing. And we’ll see how it all goes,” Kouzounas said.

King was also challenged by Democrat David Costello and another independent, Jason Cherry.

King is 80 years old. By the time he completes another round in the Senate, he would be 86 years old. But he says he's ready to return to Washington with his slogan, “Let's get it done.”
