On Sunday night, the age-old rivalry of Dallas Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers takes center stage.

However, both teams are not yet at the same level as their competitors at this point in the season. The 49ers have been plagued by injuries throughout the season, with the latest blow suffered by their wide receiver corps. Brandon Aiyuk will miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, while Deebo Samuel was hospitalized with pneumonia.

The Cowboys have dealt with a slew of injuries, but their problems go beyond who isn't on the field. Head coach Mike McCarthy has drawn the ire of Dallas fans this season as the team, particularly its defense, hasn't quite lived up to expectations. Entering Week 8, the Cowboys field a 31st-ranked scoring defense, which creates major problems for McCarthy and new Dallas defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

Now, after a bye week, fans and analysts alike will see whether the time off was beneficial to Dallas' playoff push or whether the badly injured 49ers can capitalize on a shaky Cowboys team on national television.

USA TODAY Sports will provide live updates, highlights and more for the Week 8 “Sunday Night Football” matchup between the Cowboys and 49ers below.

The running back was not listed on the Cowboys' injury report all week. According to multiple reports, Dowdle began feeling unwell after arriving at Levi's Stadium before Sunday night's game. After the Cowboys' medical staff examined the starting running back, the team ruled him out for the prime-time matchup against the 49ers.

Two-time All-Pro Micah Parsons will miss a third straight game as he continues to recover from a high ankle sprain suffered in the Cowboys' Week 4 game against the New York Giants. The linebacker hadn't practiced all week when Dallas returned from his bye week.

Here are the Cowboys' inactive players:

According to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Deebo Samuel had been battling a “pneumonia-like illness” for several weeks. The star wideout played just four snaps in San Francisco's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 and was hospitalized as recently as Tuesday. Samuel did not practice on Wednesday but was a limited participant on Thursday and Friday and will be active on Sunday night against the Cowboys.

George Kittle, who Shanahan announced as “daily” on Monday, will also be active on Sunday evening. The All-Pro tight end has been dealing with a sprained ankle that also limited him at practice this week.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are tied with the New England Patriots for the most Super Bowl wins with six.

Pittsburgh and Dallas have the unique distinction of playing each other more times, with three matchups, than any other team combination in Super Bowl history.

The 49ers have appeared in eight Super Bowls and have five rings, most recently in the 1994 season. The Cowboys have won five Super Bowls, the last of which came in the 1995 season.

Dak Prescott signed a record-breaking contract extension with the Cowboys on the eve of the NFL season. According to Spotrac.com, the terms of the contract are as follows:

  • Expression: 4 years
  • Total value: $240 million
  • Average Annual Value (AAV): $60 million
  • Guaranteed money: $231 million

The deal was contingent on the remaining year of his four-year, $160 million contract he signed with the Cowboys prior to his free agency in 2021. That will tie Prescott to the Cowboys through the 2028 season, his age-35 season.
