Authorities said Pearl High School was placed on lockdown Thursday after police received a threat about a school shooter. Police later determined the threat was not credible.

The Pearl Police Department issued a statement on social media around noon Thursday detailing the threat.

Officials wrote that police received a report on their hotline about an active shooter at the high school around 10 a.m. Thursday. Officers investigated and concluded the threat was not credible in or around the school.

Police said there will be an increased presence in and around the school for the remainder of the day. The lockdown has been lifted.

“Ensuring the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority,” the police statement said. “This report is taken seriously and we are working closely with school authorities to thoroughly assess the situation.”

Chris Chism, superintendent of the Pearl Public School District, said in a statement Thursday that he expressed his “deepest gratitude” to first responders and school staff for their “exemplary handling of this situation.” Chism said everyone's quick actions under pressure ensured the safety and well-being of all students and staff.

“Fortunately, after a thorough investigation by our local law enforcement and a quick response by our school staff, it was determined that there was no active threat. We also learned that similar threats were made today against other school districts across the country.” “These incidents are currently being investigated by Homeland Security and the FBI,” Chrism wrote.

“Safety is and remains our top priority. Incidents such as this highlight the importance of the rigorous safety training we conduct with our staff and students. “It is because of our preparedness and the good relationships we have with local law enforcement that we are able to respond effectively to any threat, real or perceived.”
