Sam Ersson leaves the game with a possible injury

1 minute, 57 seconds Read

Midway through the first period on Saturday afternoon against the Boston Bruins, the Philadelphia Flyers suffered perhaps the one thing that can't possibly happen: an injury to goaltender Sam Ersson.

The 25-year-old goaltender left the game during a timeout on television as we saw Aleksei Kolosov warming up on the ice and the younger goaltender taking his place between the pipes. Ersson made his way through the tunnel, but it didn't look like it was anything too obvious.

As noted in the tweet, just minutes earlier, while parrying a heavy shot from a Boston Bruin, Ersson's right skate blade popped off and he quickly waved to his bench to summon someone to replace his blade as quickly as possible. That's what happened. A trainer came out, slipped a new and fresh blade into Ersson's skate and the game continued.

But then, after that break, when we noticed Kolosov warming up, it seemed like things were more serious than we thought. Ersson points to his feet and shrugs as he makes his way to the bench, and he certainly walked there under his own power and didn't need any help.

At the time of writing, we are still in the dark. It could just be a long-term equipment issue, but it's certainly more likely that something was tweaked and he had to leave the game due to a possible injury. You'd think if it was just something with his equipment it would take less than a few minutes.

If Ersson is absent for an extended period of time, the Flyers will be in trouble. As things stand, an inexperienced Kolosov with less than four seasons of NHL experience will be pushed into the starting lineup and out-of-place, awkward goaltender Ivan Fedotov will be his replacement. Well, in this scenario, we can already start looking for top picks for the 2025 NHL Draft.

UPDATE:

So, yes. It's an injury Ersson is dealing with, and not just a equipment issue. We are doomed.

ANOTHER UPDATE:

Flyers general manager Danny Briere officially announced that Ersson will not return to the game.
