Report: Raiders sign Ridder from Cardinals practice squad

The Las Vegas Raiders are bringing in a new quarterback after Aidan O'Connell's thumb injury.

Las Vegas signed Desmond Ridder from the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Ridder originally moved to the Cardinals in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons in the offseason. Arizona released him in August but re-signed him to the practice squad.

The 25-year-old entered the NFL in 2022 as a top 100 pick, but was unable to retain his starting spot with the Falcons. The third-round pick completed 64% of his passes for 3,544 yards and 14 touchdowns with 12 interceptions in 19 appearances (17 starts) with Atlanta, which finished 8-9 with Ridder under center.

Ridder could have a chance to start for the Raiders at some point as Las Vegas continues to struggle to find consistency at QB. Antonio Pierce's team named Gardner Minshew its starter in Week 1, but turned to O'Connell in Week 6.

O'Connell started Week 7 against the Los Angeles Rams, but exited early after breaking his thumb. He is expected to be out for four to six weeks. Minshew threw three interceptions after coming in.

The loss to LA dropped Las Vegas to 2-5 in 2024. The Raiders play the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals in their next two games before receiving a bye in Week 10.
