RB Leipzig 0-1 Liverpool: Darwin Nunez scores as Reds remain perfect in Champions League | Football News

3 minutes, 44 seconds Read

Liverpool claimed their third of three wins in the Champions League as Darwin Nunez scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win over RB Leipzig.

The win means Arne Slot has now won 11 of his 12 games in all competitions since replacing Jurgen Klopp and it was perfect preparation for Sunday's clash with Arsenal in the Premier League, which will be broadcast live Sky Sports.

Slot's men set two new club records: they became the first Liverpool team to win their first six away games of a season and the first to triumph in eleven of their first twelve games.

Nunez, who came into the starting line-up in place of the injured Diogo Jota, scored the decisive winner in the 27th minute when he fired home from close range after Mohamed Salah's header looked like it would go into the goal anyway.

Nunez went for a penalty in the 38th minute after being brought down by Leipzig captain Willi Orban. Replays showed contact, but Swiss referee Sandro Scharer was unconvinced and VAR somehow failed to intervene.

The visitors had expected goals worth 2.38, but were unable to score a second goal as Péter Gulácsi made some impressive saves in the RB Leipzig goal and Alexis Mac Allister also hit the crossbar.

Slot's team is the only team alongside Aston Villa with a 100 percent record in the Champions League and leads the league phase.

Analysis: Liverpool make RB Leipzig look ordinary

Lewis Jones from Sky Sports:

“Anyone who doubts whether this Liverpool team can compete on all fronts needs to find a better argument than 'But who did they play against?' Now.

“They faced two strong teams in Chelsea and RB Leipzig and Slot’s men beat them and deservedly won both games. Winning at the Red Bull Arena shouldn't be easy, but Liverpool made it look that way.” For much of this game, especially after Nunez scored the first goal, RB Leipzig took 17 points after seven Bundesliga games, making themselves as have proven to be a very dangerous and energetic team that can cause problems for anyone on their day in Europe.

“This team will be a worry for Manchester City and Arsenal – they look like serious players for both the Premier League and the Champions League.”

Liverpool coach Arne Slot in conversation with TNT Sports: “We are really happy with the win. We knew it would be a difficult away game, but what pleased me most was that we controlled large parts of it, except for the last 15 to 20 minutes when we really needed our two central defenders. “We stayed without conceding a goal, and our goalkeeper also kept a clean sheet in two big moments. In my opinion that was unnecessary.

“If we had left that place with a draw, I would have really felt like we lost something. We dominated the last 70 minutes – except maybe the first 10.”

Liverpool coach Arne Slot says he liked “a lot of what I saw” in his side's clash with RB Leipzig, but admitted that “the game should have been our game after 70 minutes”.

What does Liverpool need to reach the knockout stages?

Liverpool have nine points and need just one point from their remaining five Champions League games to at least secure a place in the knockout play-offs.

But Slot's side will now look to the top eight, 15 points behind, enough to move straight into the round of 16.

Two wins from five games doesn't sound too difficult, does it?
