Police shoot suspect who barricaded himself in Reno's Lakemill Lodge

One person was hospitalized in unknown condition after being shot by police Thursday morning at Lakemill Lodge near downtown Reno.

The police operation began shortly before 7 a.m. on October 31, just hours after the motel was closed due to a failed health inspection and all residents were forced to leave the motel.

Reno police said the suspect was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

The shooting protocol for regional officers was issued.

Roads surrounding Lakemill Lodge, including portions of Lake and Mill roads, will be closed for several hours while investigators complete their work.

Northern Nevada Public Health and the city of Ren conducted a joint inspection Wednesday as part of an ongoing investigation into code violations. During the inspection, authorities found human waste and used hypodermic syringes in the stairwells of common areas.

Rapid testing showed the syringes returned positive results for fentanyl, methamphetamine and heroin, according to a health district spokesperson.

Because the common stairwells are the building's main exit points, all residents were evacuated and the motel was closed until further notice.

The health district said Lakemill Lodge will remain closed until remediation efforts are complete and officials determine it is safe to reopen.

Officials and community partners are working to relocate Lakemill Lodge residents into temporary housing while the motel is rehabilitated.
