    Pistons fall to 0-3 on the season due to failed comeback against Celtics

    Detroit — Jaden Ivey, disappointed after Friday night's tough loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, told The Detroit News that despite the two-game losing streak, he was proud of the Pistons' performance in both games.

    Less than 24 hours later, the effort and competitive nature Ivey spoke of was evident in the second half against the Boston Celtics. However, Detroit's performance against the defending champions was not enough and resulted in a 124-118 loss that reduced the Pistons to 0-3 at the start of the 2024-25 season.

    The Pistons' comeback attempt was an overall team effort. After trailing by 23 points, the Pistons outscored the Celtics 26-11 seven minutes into the third quarter, and with 2:59 left, Detroit had an 88-86 lead. Boston had a 94-93 lead early in the fourth quarter. However, the Pistons outscored the Celtics 19-15 in the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter.

    Their play helped the Pistons take a 112-106 lead with five minutes left, but back-to-back 3-point field goals by Jrue Holiday led to Boston ending the game on an 18-12 run.

    Malik Beasley had a tremendous performance for Detroit in the second half. He scored 12 of his 17 points by shooting 4 of 5 on 3-point shooting. Beasley's third 3-point field goal of the night helped the Pistons take a 108-106 lead with 8:16 left in the final period.

    BOX SCORE: Celtics 124, Pistons 118

    Jaden Ivey led the Pistons with a team-high 26 points on 10 of 18 shooting, six assists and five rebounds in the loss. Jalen Duren added 15 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

    The Pistons' near-comeback effort in the second half wasn't evident in the first 24 minutes. Jayson Tatum scored 17 in the first quarter, leading the Celtics to a 42-31 lead early in the second period. Tatum scored 22 of his 37 goals in the first half, going 8 of 14 and 5 of 10 on 3-point shooting, leading to Boston's 73-62 halftime lead.

    However, Tatum wasn't the only one who dominated the Celtics in the first half. In the first half, Payton Pritchard scored 16 of his 19 goals, while Al Horford scored all of his 17 goals on five three-pointers. Cade Cunningham finished the game with 21 points on 9-of-22 shooting, along with 10 assists and six rebounds.

    The Pistons will look to avoid their fourth straight loss in a road game against the Miami Heat on Monday night. It's the start of a two-game trip that ends Wednesday night against the Philadelphia 76ers. The opener between the Pistons and Heat is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Kaseya Center.
