The Philadelphia Union has announced the sudden and shocking death of goalkeeper Holden Trent at the age of 25.

The club confirmed the goalkeeper's death in a statement released on Saturday afternoon. No cause of death was announced.

“The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking death of Holden Trent,” the club said. “Although he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was, above all, a devoted son, brother, fiancé and teammate who made those around him better.”

According to screenshots from Trent's social media accounts from October 24, he was admitted to the intensive care unit earlier this week for unknown reasons.

A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Trent played college soccer at West Virginia University and High Point University. He also played in the academies of USL clubs Charlotte Independence and South Georgia Tormenta FC.

From there, he was selected 28th overall by the Union in the 2023 MLS Super Draft.

According to the club website, Trent played six games for Philadelphia's MLS Next Pro team – his last game was on June 26 of this year against the New York Red Bulls II.
