Pennsylvania county extends voting times following ballot scanning “software issue.”

A judge in Pennsylvania approved a request to extend voting hours to 10 p.m. ET after a “glitch” prevented voters in Cambria County from scanning their ballots.

Election officials emphasized that no one who wanted to cast their vote would be turned away and that all votes would be counted. Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Whatley urged voters to stay in line and cast their ballots despite the delay.

“The Cambria County Board of Elections learned earlier today that a software glitch in the county’s electronic voting system prevented voters from scanning their ballots,” County Attorney Ron Repak said in a statement. “This should not deter voters from voting in their precincts.”

“All completed ballots will be accepted, secured and counted by the Board of Elections. The district election board has express voting machines (sic) at the district locations to continue to enable electronic voting while also allowing hand votes to be cast,” Repak said.

All votes cast after the original closing time of 8 p.m. ET will be through provisional ballots, the court ordered.

The Pennsylvania Department of State said it was working with local officials to resolve the issue.

“The Department of State is in contact with county officials in Cambria County. Voters will continue to vote by paper ballot according to normal procedures while the county resolves the issue through in-county scanning. We are working with the county to resolve this technical matter and remain committed to ensuring a free, fair, safe and secure election.”
