Two-headed monster joins forces

With the Penguins 3-6-1 on the young season after picking up just one point during their four-game road trip across Canada, the coaching staff decided to put Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the same line during the rush.

“They are pretty dynamic players. We’re trying different combinations to see if we can create a spark for the group,” Sullivan said. “We've had a number of different combinations here in the early stages. “The season and given the circumstances we're in and the circumstances we're in at the moment, we thought we'd try it out in training today and see what it looks like. “

Sullivan actually used Crosby and Malkin several times in those first ten games off the power play, more than in any other year of his time with the Penguins. For example, Crosby and Malkin had quite a bit of time together in the third period against the Canucks. They also walked the boards together after headlines and whenever the coaching staff felt the Penguins needed to generate momentum or generate offense.

“Obviously they’re both generational talents,” Sullivan said. “If they are potentially on the ice at the same time, that could pose a particular threat. We thought we would give it a try. We'll see where it goes.

For his part, Crosby is happy to do whatever he can to get the Penguins back on track after a tough road swing.

“I mean, whatever will translate into wins. I think that’s whatever the combinations are,” the captain said. “So, yeah, I don't think we're changing anything, except hopefully we can find another level with some losses here.” Desperation, urgency and finding a way to get back in the win column.
