Paint the city blue: LA lights landmarks for Dodgers win

This month marks more than 60 years since the Dodgers defeated the Chicago White Sox and won their first World Series in front of more than 90,000 baseball fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Back then, the Coliseum lit its torch to honor the team's victory, and now, with the Dodgers winning their eighth World Series championship, the Coliseum has lit its torch again. And for the next two nights, the Colosseum's peristyle will be bathed in blue light.

Since the Dodgers' miraculous comeback win on Wednesday night, some of LA County's most iconic buildings and attractions have found ways to celebrate the Boys in Blue, from the Pacific Wheel at the Santa Monica Pier to LA City Hall.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, whose father, Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, helped bring the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958, called for the Coliseum torch to be lit.

“I thought it would be appropriate to light the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum torch in celebration of the Dodgers' victory at the site where the team played its first World Series-winning season,” Hahn said. “We love our team.

“Every corner of Los Angeles is celebrating today,” she said.

Up in the hills of Griffith Park, the letter “D” on the Hollywood sign glowed blue.

In Inglewood, a spokesman for SoFi Stadium said the building's roof will display “2024 World Series Champions LA Dodgers” in blue lighting Thursday night. A similar message was already visible on the Samsung Infinity screen in the stadium.

The festivities culminate on Friday with a victory parade through downtown and separate celebrations at Dodger Stadium. Expect lots of blue.
