(Maryville) – Severe weather came and went across KMAland Wednesday morning and afternoon, leaving significant damage in its wake.

Numerous severe thunderstorm warnings were issued as a strong line of storms rolled across the area in the late morning hours. The fast-moving storms left the region in the afternoon, but not before battering northwest Missouri – particularly Nodaway County. Christy Forney, Nodaway County Emergency Management Coordinator, handled numerous damage reports. In an NWS chat message, Forney noted that in the western part of the county, several utility poles were broken, grain bins were blown over, a tool shed was destroyed and a garage fell off its foundation. She added that trees were felled in the northern and central parts of the county. In fact, a tree is said to have fallen on an unoccupied house in Pickering. There were also reports that the roof of a large tool shed was blown off, part of the roof of a house was removed, several buildings collapsed and a mobile home overturned. No injuries were reported.

In addition to strong winds, the storm front also left behind heavy rain and cooler temperatures. In fact, 0.88 was recorded at the KMA studios at 3pm on Wednesday – the first measurable rainfall since 0.07 on October 22nd. Still, National Weather Service meteorologist Taylor Nicolaisen told KMA News earlier this week that any precipitation would not be a trigger for the drought.

“It’s difficult to get significant rain in late October or early November,” Nicolaisen said. “We love seeing these volumes, but we've just been so dry the last few months. We're definitely going to need more than that to really get the drought to where it should be. We would like to see.” Of course, in the next few months we will see the precipitation change from rain to snow so that the drought improves significantly. It can snow here too.

High temperatures on Thursday will only reach the mid 50s, with a 20% chance of rain.
