Niners face Chiefs in Super Bowl rematch

Niners face Chiefs in Super Bowl rematch

1 minute, 4 seconds Read

The 49ers face their biggest test of the young season on Sunday when they host the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs, who they last saw in the Super Bowl in February.

The Chiefs, led by superstar Patrick Mahomes, destroyed the 49ers' championship dreams with a 25-22 win in overtime that night in Las Vegas.

The Niners enter the game with a few extra days of rest and a number of players looking to get healthy after Thursday night's win at Seattle last week. Jordan Mason (shoulder) and Deebo Samuel (wrist) were limited in practice this week after sustaining injuries in that game, and the 49ers have suffered two kicker injuries in as many weeks.

Like the 49ers, the Chiefs lacked their own running back in Christian McCaffrey all season long. Isiah Pacheco underwent leg surgery in mid-September and was able to return six to eight weeks after that procedure. Kansas City is also missing wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice, who underwent knee surgery last week.

Kansas City's offense has caused some consternation, ranking 15th in the league with 23.6 points per game and 11th in yards allowed with 354.6 per game. Mahomes struggled to avoid mistakes, throwing six touchdowns and six interceptions in five games.
