“They deserve more points” – Maresca on the game against Newcastle in the Premier League

Newcastle United and Chelsea renew hostilities in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, just days after clashing in the Premier League. The fourth round takes place at St James' Park as the Blues emerged 2-1 winners on home soil in the top flight, with Cole Palmer again scoring for his side.

Eddie Howe's Magpies are again struggling with injuries and inconsistencies among key players and sit 12th in the league table with three wins, three draws and three defeats so far – while Chelsea under Enzo Maresca are in fifth place after five wins from nine.

However, they are also far more likely to make more name changes this evening, with players such as Mykhailo Mudryk, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Christopher Nkunku all hoping for game time and not currently in Maresca's league squad. With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, both teams will definitely give their all to achieve victory.

Lively play from Joao Felix, switching in and out to outwit two retreating defenders and finally place a shot between them. There's too much momentum in the effort, but Felix's sparkling feet look in good condition.

And now follows Sean Longstaff Schar, whose name has spiraled out of control as he rattles Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The midfielder is now 27 years old – not the card he would have wanted.

A good fight is brewing on this site between Joelinton and Axel Disasi, two big and strong personalities who have some entertaining duels at the start.

On the other hand, Fabian Schar is a little late as Christopher Nkunku raged while the Chelsea striker quickly advanced on the right. In the book goes the captain of Newcastle.

It looks like Joao Felix will play as Chelsea's number ten, just behind Christopher Nkunku, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Mudryk providing width on either side. Joelinton is one of Newcastle's front three players and not in the midfield role we have seen him in more often over the last few seasons.

Enzo Fernandez's attempt to switch play goes wrong, the thrown pass is misplaced and misjudged, leaving Mykhailo Mudryk far too much to do.

Almost a start! Renato Veiga passes to Marc Cucurella's beautiful cut-back, and only Sandro Tonali's protruding leg prevents the Chelsea midfielder from hitting the net. Even with a leg kick from the Italian it's not far away, Nick Pope is well beaten.

Jorgensen was more authoritative and made a strong decision to come out and deny Anthony Gordon the chance to use his pace to gain a lead over the top.

A slightly nervous moment for Filip Jorgensen as the Chelsea goalkeeper went a long way to win Lewis Hall's free kick but failed to concede it cleanly. Joelinton can't quite shoot the loose ball into the goal.

Get rid of the woodwork! Joelinton wraps himself around the post in disbelief after thundering into the box to parry a lovely low cross from Alexander Isak and seemingly scoring the winning goal. But his sideways attempt clips the outside of the post!

However, the first chance goes to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who was substituted by Christopher Nkunku, but was unable to direct his shot past Nick Pope, who was hiding between his legs. An excellent early sighting for the former Leicester player.
