New poll in Iowa aims to show whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris is leading in Iowa

Published exclusively in the Register since 1943, the Iowa Poll is a closely watched indicator of candidate strength during election cycles, as well as Iowans' opinions on other important issues.

Does Vice President Kamala Harris have a chance of beating former President Donald Trump in ruby red Iowa?

With Election Day just around the corner, our new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll will show whether Harris or Trump has the upper hand among Iowa voters.

Our last poll in September showed Trump leading Harris by 4 percentage points, a much tighter race than our June poll that had Trump leading President Joe Biden by 18 points. Biden ultimately dropped out of the race.

The first results of the November Iowa poll will be released online at DesMoinesRegister.com on Saturday at 6 p.m. These results will also be published in print in the Des Moines Register on Sunday.

What else will be in the new Iowa poll?

This month's Iowa poll will also gauge Iowa voters' interest in a third-party candidate like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. or libertarian Chase Oliver – and whether voters have decided which candidate they will support for president. Although he has abandoned his campaign, Kennedy's name will appear on the ballot in Iowa.

Additionally, the poll will show how enthusiastic Iowans are about their election for president and whether they are confident that votes will be counted as intended in the coming election – both in Iowa and across the United States.

And it will ask voters what issues they thought about when deciding to support Trump or Harris:

Abortion.
Immigration.
Inflation and the economy.
Make sure their preferred party is in the White House.
The future of democracy.
American aid to war-torn countries like Israel and Ukraine.

It asks voters in Iowa who don't vote for Trump whether they have ever supported him or whether they consider themselves “never-Trumpers.”

The Iowa poll will also show whether Iowans believe it would be right or wrong for Trump to order the Justice Department to drop all charges against him if he wins the presidency.

Where are the congressional elections?

The poll asks Iowans whether they would vote for a Republican or Democratic congressional candidate.

Two of Iowa's four congressional races, in the 1st and 3rd districts, were rated “tots-up” by the nationally known Cook Political Report.
