Nevada Day will be celebrated with family-friendly fun, and state and local offices will be closed

Friday marks Nevada Day, when the state recognizes its admission into the Union and its 160th birthday.

Nevada became the 36th state on October 31, 1864, and the Silver State celebrates Nevada Day on the last Friday of October each year.

The holiday means all state, county and city offices will be closed on Friday. Clark and Washoe counties also have no public school instruction.

Federal offices will remain open, meaning services such as mail delivery will continue as usual on Friday.

To mark the occasion, Southern Nevada's two professional ice hockey teams will play special matinee home games. The Henderson Silver Knights will play the San Jose Barracuda at 11 a.m. at Lee's Family Forum during the The Vegas Golden Knights drop the puck at 3 p.m. against the Ottowa Senators at T-Mobile Arena.

Nevada's newest ice hockey team, the Tahoe Knight Monsters, will also play a night game against the Jacksonville Icemen at the Tahoe Blue Event Center in Stateline.

AREA15 celebrates Nevada Day with a family-friendly event Trick and treat event. at more than a dozen venues. There will be a costume parade, karaoke, face painting and a Thriller flash mob.

Springs Preserve will host Nevada Day Celebration from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free for Nevada residents with valid identification and no reservations are required.

Activities include Nevada ghost town stories, gold panning, state insect crafts and pub-style trivia.
