LINCOLN – Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen predicts 72% turnout statewideor the 2024 general election, an estimate based on early voting and turnout trends in recent general elections.

That's in the same league as the 76% national voter turnout in the 2020 presidential election fueled by the overwhelming number of early voting related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Evnen said in a news release Monday that county election offices have done a “remarkable job” helping early voters cast their ballots safely.

“Nebraskans continue to comply with the new voter ID requirement before voting, and we expect this will continue on Election Day,” he said.

What to know before Election Day in the 2024 Nebraska general election

Nebraska has 1,264,149 registered voters. So far, Evnen said, 332,455 registered voters have successfully cast their ballots for the Nov. 5 general election.

Of these, 72,049 voted in person in advance at the district election offices and 260,406 voted in advance by postal vote, including voters in districts or electoral districts who voted by post.

His office offered some important advice:

Today (Monday, November 4) is the last day voters can vote in person in advance at county election offices.

Tuesday (November 5) is the last day voters can return their early ballots to county election offices.

To be counted, early voting ballots must be returned to county election offices by the close of polls (8:00 p.m. Central Time, 7:00 p.m. Mountain Time) on Election Day. Late ballots will not be accepted, even if they were postmarked on or before Election Day.

Evnen's staff said Monday that it was too late for voters to mail their early ballots. Voters should take advantage secure mailboxes to return their early ballots before the polls close on Election Day.

Nebraskans can find their polling place at Voter Check.

Voters should be prepared to vote with acceptable identification: Nebraska driver's license or state ID; US passport; military ID; Tribal ID; hospital, intermediate care facility, assisted living facility, or nursing home records; Nebraska political subdivision ID (state, county, city, school, etc.); Identification card from a Nebraska college or university (public or private).

The ID must contain the voter's name and photo. IDs may be expired. Nebraska's new law does not require Nebraska voters to re-register to vote. Voter ID training materials are available in English and Spanish at voterID.nebraska.gov.
