Missouri voters face important decisions about changes to the ballot on Election Day

KSNF/KODE – With just days until Election Day, Missouri voters face six questions on the ballot.

Tonight we take a look at three of these important questions.

A court fee is at the heart of Missouri Amendment Six.

The measure would cost a $3 fee that would go into the state sheriff's pension fund.

This would benefit sheriffs and former sheriffs as well as prosecutors, former prosecutors, district attorneys and former district attorneys.

The state had imposed a similar fee until 2021, when a state Supreme Court ruling declared the previous version unconstitutional.

“Since this decision was made, the sheriff's pension fund has declined by $800,000 and is projected to be insolvent in about 8 years, or maybe 9 years now,” said Mo Rep. Lane Roberts (R).

Amendment seven addresses the voting process itself.

It would ensure that only U.S. citizens can vote and ban ranked-choice voting.

“Ranked-choice voting allows you to not just select one candidate, but to rank all candidates,” said Dr. Nicole Foster Shoaf, MSSU Assoc. Prof. Political Science.

This means that multiple candidates from one party could make it past the primary and into the general election.

Then there is Proposition A, which would increase the state minimum wage.

The current hourly wage is $12.30.

A “yes” vote would mean $13.75 next year and $15 in 2026, with increases tied to the consumer price index each year.

“People need to have a wage so they can feel comfortable, make a living, pay their bills and still eat,” Prop A supporter Melodee Colbert Kean said.

“The biggest problem is when I have flat sales and I have to give $1 or $2 or whatever the difference is to make up to $15 an hour, where is the money coming from,” Larry said Warren, who opposes Prop A.

Election Day is next Tuesday, November 5th.
