Metronet outage also affects Iowa, leaving thousands of people without internet

Metronet is experiencing an outage across the Midwest, leaving tens of thousands of customers without internet access.

The Des Moines Register contacted Metronet, but the company did not immediately respond. Information about the cause of the failure is not available.

Where does Metronet operate in Iowa?

According to the company's website, Metronet serves Iowa communities including Ames, Bettendorf, Cedar Falls, Davenport, Des Moines, Mason City, Sioux City, Urbandale, Waterloo and West Des Moines, as well as dozens of others. The internet service provider recently expanded to Council Bluffs.

How many people are without internet due to the Metronet outage?

The outage reports began around 1 a.m., with almost 5,000 people reporting connection problems on the Downdetector website.

As of 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, more than 12,000 people nationwide had reported an outage on the website. Reports tapered off around 7 a.m. and about 800 people reported problems.

Where were the areas affected by the Metronet outages?

The largest outages in the state appear to be in central and southwestern Iowa. Other affected areas include Minneapolis, Chicago and St. Louis, according to Downdector.
