After moving from New Hampshire this offseason, Max Brosmer came to Minnesota as a relatively unknown player. His performance against Maryland in the U's home game on Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis should have answered any questions people have about him as the Gophers' quarterback.

Brosmer became the first Gophers quarterback to throw at least four touchdown passes since Tanner Morgan in 2019 and the first to throw for at least 300 yards through the air since Athan Kaliakmanis in 2022. He finished his afternoon 26 of 33 for 320 passing yards and four touchdowns.

“His efficiency, his poise, the accuracy with which he threw, the processing of information — they took different looks at him,” Gophers coach PJ Fleck said when asked what he liked most about his performance. “What I love about our team is that it doesn’t matter who you are, you get the ball when you’re on the rise.”

Minnesota's offense scored 48 points, its most points against a Big Ten opponent since 52 against Maryland in 2019. Wide receivers Daniel Jackson and Elijah Spencer both had more than 90 yards and two touchdowns. Star running back Darius Taylor added a 51-yard touchdown run. Everything seemed to be clicking for the Gophers offense.

“I thought Greg Harbaugh played a great game. The offensive team did a great job. We gave them the game ball in the locker room and it was fully deserved,” Fleck said. “I think he did a great job of mixing it all up. Fast game, RPO game, vertical game. I thought our players made plays.”

Saturday was Brosmer's third straight game with a completion rate above 70%, something Minnesota achieved only once at the quarterback position last season. He set season highs in yards and touchdowns, but it looks like everything is falling into place.

“It's just progress, so to speak, that I've personally taken with me, but this attack has also increased,” Brosmer said. “We had some really good games at the start of the season, some tough defeats, but we're starting to put things together now. We started to feel that in the last three games. We hit everything we need to hit.”

Minnesota and Brosmer will get a chance to keep the momentum going on the road next week against Illinois.
