    HATTIESBURG – The big problems that have plagued Southern Miss football this season, a pliable defense and an offense prone to cold streaks, were also a problem in the Golden Eagles' 44-28 loss to Arkansas State.

    Southern Miss (1-6, 0-3 Sun Belt) gave up 467 to Arkansas State (4-3, 2-1). For a while, it appeared the Golden Eagles' offense could hold its own in a shootout. Southern Miss scored 14 points in the second quarter and rallied from an early deficit to get back to a one-possession game with 54 seconds left in the second quarter.

    The momentum didn't last.

    Southern Miss' offense went cold in the second half and was shut down in the third quarter.

    USM coach Will Hall made the decision to bench quarterback Tate Rodemaker two weeks ago. Sophomore quarterback Ethan Crawford, making his fourth career start, had a mixed performance. Crawford threw for 187 and rushed for 87 but was sacked six times. Crawford ran for two scores but had no passing touchdowns and one interception.

    When quarterback Ethan Crawford found room to play, he showed why coach Will Hall promoted him to the starting position midway through the season. Crawford has 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

    Arkansas State goes on an 11-game scoring streak and improves by two possessions. Southern Miss gave up 210 rushing yards.

    Southern Miss scored three rushing touchdowns in a game for the first time this season. Freshman running back Jalen Washington's final touchdown was his first touchdown.

    Arkansas State receiver Corey Rucker caught a back-shoulder fade pass brilliantly. It includes a six-play, 65-yard drive.

    Southern Miss put together another 11-play touchdown drive. This ended with a short run by quarterback Ethan Crawford. He tucked it away and charged into the corner of the end zone, where he beat the Red Wolves' farthest defender.

    Arkansas State’s offense hasn’t missed yet. The Red Wolves converted all three possessions in the first quarter into touchdowns. Everything works. Arkansas State racked up 211 total yards on Southern Miss with less than a minute left in the first quarter

    Southern Miss quarterback Ethan Crawford delivered an impressive response to Arkansas State's early point surge. Crawford led Southern Miss on an 11-play touchdown drive. This is Southern Miss' longest points drive this season. Crawford accounted for 17 rushing yards on the drive.

    Southern Miss also benefited from a horse-collar tackle on the drive.

    Southern Miss' early deficit doubled in no time. After failing to gain a first down on their first offensive possession, the Golden Eagles were unable to beat Malik Hornsby. The speedy Arkansas State wideout found space on the sideline on the first play of the Red Wolves' second possession.

    Arkansas State's early playbook worked perfectly. The Red Wolves played the ball at their 25-yard line early in the game and marched 75 yards in nine plays. Most of the damage was caused by the air. Arkansas State quarterback Jaylen Raynor passed six-for-six and connected with Adam Jones for the score.
