This story has been updated based on initial election results.

Republican Mark Amodei was declared the winner in his bid for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives against nonpartisan Greg Kidd in the race for Nevada's Congressional District 2, which covers the top half of the state.

Amodei had 57% of the vote, Kidd 35%.

Independent American candidate Lynn Chapman and Libertarian candidate Javi Tachiquin received 4% and 3%, respectively.

• What is at stake: A surprise for Kidd could allow Democrats to capture a majority of seats in the House of Representatives. The Republicans currently have a narrow lead. Election observers believe Kidd's victory is unlikely.

The news from this race might be how close Kidd can get. Doing better than the Democrats in recent years could inspire Kidd to try again in 2026, perhaps as a Democrat or even a Republican.

But for now, Kidd appears to be on the spectrum of recent Democratic opponents. In 2022, Amodei won with 22 points and in 2020 with 16 points.

Kidd, a wealthy technology investor from Lake Tahoe, self-funded his campaign. He is trying to win by winning over Democrats and bipartisans and by overperforming in Washoe County to offset Amodei's overwhelming advantage in rural Nevada counties.

Kidd has indicated he will run again.

Amodei has held the seat since 2011.
