Marcel Reed was announced as Texas A&M Starting quarterback against South CarolinaBut the decision wasn't just for Saturday evening. He'll be the starter going forward, that is Conner Weigman will move into a substitute role, Mike Elko said ABC's Molly McGrath.

Reed was given the go-ahead Saturday night after Elko made the decision Sunday, McGrath reported before kickoff. That meant Weigman will take on a backup role and Texas A&M doesn't plan to use both quarterbacks like it did against them last week LSU.

Going forward, it will be Reed's job, Elko told ABC. McGrath spoke to running back Le'Veon Moss about the decision and praised the skills that Reed brings Collin Kleins Attack.

“Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko informed us that he decided on Sunday that Marcel Reed is their future starting quarterback and Conner Weigman is now their backup quarterback,” McGrath said before kickoff of Saturday's game. “There is no plan to play Weigman here tonight. Of course, this Aggies team believes in Marcel Reed.

“Their running back, Le'Veon Moss, told us that his composure and playmaking ability really impressed this team, saying, 'Every time he steps on the field, something good happens.' “He's an underrated thrower, his running ability opens up more holes for our running backs to make plays. “I'm told nothing can faze him.”

Weigman started last week's game against LSU and completed 6 of 18 passes for 64 yards. But with Texas A&M trailing 17-7, Elko decided to bring Reed into the game – and he got the offense going. The Aggies scored on every drive after transition en route to a primetime victory over LSU. Reed completed both pass attempts for 64 yards and added 62 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Elko didn't make a decision on quarterback all week. He received several questions about which route he would take, including during an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show on Thursday. Even then, he gave no sign and said staff were still working on a plan.

“I think we’re still in the phase of our process,” Elko said. “We’ll figure that out at the start of the weekend and then on Saturday night we’ll challenge the guy who we believe gives us the best chance to be successful as a team.”
