A 29-year-old Wichita man was sentenced to life in prison for killing his girlfriend and her daughter in south Wichita in March 2020 in what police described as a domestic homicide.

Daniel Oswaldo Lopez was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with parole eligibility after 50 years for his guilty plea to first-degree murder. He was sentenced to 184 months in prison for his additional guilty plea to second-degree murder, Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office spokesman Dan Dillon said Thursday.

Sedgwick County District Judge Eric Williams imposed the sentences consecutively, meaning Lopez will have to begin his 184-month sentence when he is paroled after 50 years, according to Dillon.

Lopez pleaded guilty to the June 26 to March 28, 2020, shooting deaths of his girlfriend, 24-year-old Mickayla Sorell, and her daughter, 8-year-old Natalya Sorell.

Police found the bodies of both victims on March 30, 2020, during a welfare check at a home in the 4500 block of South Walnut after Sorell failed to show up for work. Authorities determined the shooting occurred two days before police discovered the bodies.

Lopez went on the run and was arrested more than a week later, on April 10, 2020, at a family member's home.

A probation violation arrest warrant issued after the shooting said Lopez allegedly forced someone at gunpoint to drive him around on the same day of the shooting.

The punishment for Lopez includes life in prison upon release and $5,000 in restitution for funeral expenses to the family of Lopez's two victims, Dillon said in an email.
